The Love Formula data analysis evolved from an independent survey examining whether couples who remain together exhibit closer alignment in Values and Traits compared to those who break up. The survey was administered through Survey Monkey.​

The survey comprised three sections:
  1. Personal Profile: Age, sex, and relationship status
  2. Values: Self-evaluation and partner evaluation
  3. Traits: Partner evaluation

Top Values for Men

The percentages indicate the relative importance of these Values, with a clear lead for Honesty/Dependability/Reliability. Interestingly, the Values that men have ranked in their Top Five all relate to foundational aspects of a relationship—trust, communication, intellect, family, and finances—suggesting that these are seen as the building blocks for a healthy and sustainable partnership. The fact that these Values are ranked above others may indicate that men are looking for more than just surface-level attributes in a partner, seeking deeper compatibility & shared life goals.

Honesty/Dependability/Reliability (19.8%)

This emerged as the most important Value, with nearly one-fifth of men ranking it as the most important. It suggests that men place a premium on trust and consistency in a partner, which are foundational for a stable relationship.

Communication Style/Manners (12.4%)

Good communication and manners were the second most important Value, indicating that men greatly appreciate the way their partner interacts with others and expresses themselves, which is key to mutual understanding and respect.

Education/Knowledge/Street Smarts (12.1%)

This closely followed communication style/manners in importance, showing that intellectual compatibility and the ability to apply knowledge and street smarts effectively is highly regarded among men.

Family Values (10.9%)

Ranking fourth, this demonstrates the importance men place on a partner who shares a strong commitment to family life, suggesting that a partner’s orientation toward family is a significant consideration for long-term relationship prospects.

Financial Choices (9.7%)

Completing the Top Five Values for men, this indicates that financial responsibility and similar attitudes toward money are important to a significant number of men, reflecting the practical side of partnership in terms of economic harmony.

Top Values for Women

Both men and women ranked Honesty/Dependability/Reliability and Communication Style/Manners as the two most important Values in a relationship, indicating a shared belief that trust and effective dialogue are essential for a successful partnership. Women ranked Occupation/Work Ethic/Self-Discipline higher than men did, which could suggest that women see a partner’s professional life as more indicative of their overall character and suitability as a long-term partner. Financial choices were also a Top 5 Value for both, but women rated this slightly higher, possibly reflecting a concern for financial security and responsibility. Education/Knowledge/Street Smarts was a Top 5  Value for both genders, but men ranked it slightly higher than women, which could suggest that men place a bit more emphasis on intellectual compatibility. While the Top 5 Values were common between the genders, the differences in percentages indicate nuances in the degree of importance placed on these Values. For instance, women’s higher rating of Communication Style/Manners might reflect a greater emphasis on the emotional quality of the relationship.

This was the most important Value among women and was slightly higher than it was for men (19.8%). It indicates that women place the utmost importance on trust and dependability in a partner.

Women rated communication slightly higher than men (12.4%), which suggests that women may place a slightly greater emphasis on the manner and quality of interactions within a relationship.

This closely followed communication style/manners in importance, showing that intellectual compatibility and the ability to apply knowledge and street smarts effectively is highly regarded among men.

For women, this ranked fourth, whereas it was the third most important for men. Both genders value intellectual compatibility, but it seems men give it a slightly higher priority.

Women ranked this fifth in their list of prioritized Values, similar to men, but the percentage was slightly higher for women. This suggests that women are slightly more concerned with how a partner manages finances.

This Trait topped the list, with a significant percentage of men finding generosity, thoughtfulness, and kindness to be the most attractive. This suggests that men place high importance on the moral character of and warmth in a partner.

Physical attributes were the second most appealing Trait for men. This indicates a strong visual component to attraction, with men placing importance on a partner’s physical presence and the aesthetic qualities they find attractive.

Humorous/Witty/Clever (13.1%)

A good sense of humor and wit was the third most attractive Trait. This reflects men’s appreciation for a partner who can engage in playful banter and provide a light-hearted dynamic in the relationship.

Sexual/Sensual (9.6%)

Sensuality and sexuality were the fourth-ranking Traits, emphasizing the importance of physical and emotional intimacy in attraction for men.

Both men and women placed a high priority on Generosity/Thoughtfulness/Kindness and Humor/Wit/Cleverness. This suggests the universal appeal of a compassionate partner with a sense of humor, which can be essential for building a positive and joyful relationship. Body Shape/Height/Appearance are important for both genders, but they were ranked higher by men (15.4%) than women (11.9%). This difference indicates that while physical attraction is universally significant, men may prioritize it more.


Traits associated with determination, such as Passion/Drive/Ambition, were featured prominently in the Top 5 Traits for both men and women. This indicates that both genders place a high value on motivation. Traits related to intellect (Intelligent/Sharp/Quick-Thinking) were in the Top Five Traits for women but did not appear in the men’s ratings, which might suggest that women place a slightly higher regard on smarts than men. Intuition/good instinct/emotional Intelligence was ranked highly by men (8.6%), whereas it was slightly lower for women (7.6%). This small difference could imply that while emotional intelligence is important for both genders, men might place a slightly higher importance on it. Social Traits (Social/Outgoing/Extroverted) appeared in the Top 5 Traits for women but not for men, indicating a possible gender difference in appreciation of social dynamics within relationships.

The most attractive Traits for women in a partner were generosity, thoughtfulness, and kindness, suggesting a strong preference for altruism and warmth.

Young men (18–24) prefer Generosity/Thoughtfulness/Kindness and Humor/Wit/Cleverness, seeking partners who are vibrant and understanding. For men aged 25–34, body Shape/Height/Appearance gains importance alongside passion/drive/ambition, indicating a balance between aesthetic appeal and deeper personal qualities. By midlife (35–54), Intuition/Good Instinct/Emotional Intelligence becomes as critical as Generosity/Thoughtfulness/Kindness and Body Shape/Height/Appearance, showing a preference for emotionally fulfilling relationships. The emergence of sexuality/sensuality as a preferred Trait appears in men over 45.
